Abstract

Epidendrum schunkei D.E. Benn & Christenson was collected at foothill semideciduous and evergreen forests in the province of El Oro, Ecuador. This species was previously known from the extreme northwestern Andes of Peru, and the Ecuadorian localities increase the species distribution by 110 km N from the type locality and its altitudinal range by ca. 1000 m. The new records of E. schunkei suggest that orchid diversity of southwestern Ecuador might include additional species currently known only from Peru.
