Resumen

Los polihidroxialcanoatos (PHA) son biopolímeros que han ganado relevancia por su biodegradabilidad y su potencial para reemplazar plásticos convencionales, lo que los convierte en una solución prometedora para mitigar la contaminación plástica. La producción de PHA a partir de ácidos grasos volátiles (AGV), obtenidos mediante el tratamiento anaeróbico de residuos, se presenta como una alternativa sostenible y respetuosa con el medio ambiente frente a las rutas tradicionales de producción. Este artículo analiza el tratamiento anaeróbico de diversos residuos, como glicerol, aceite de palma, bagazo de frutas y vegetales, suero de leche y melaza, con el objetivo de generar AGV. Se evalúan estos sustratos por su disponibilidad, bajo costo y compatibilidad con procesos biotecnológicos sostenibles. Además, se discuten las ventajas y limitaciones de cada sustrato, junto con las condiciones óptimas de operación para maximizar la conversión de los residuos en AGV, con implicaciones significativas para el desarrollo de biorrefinerías integradas y la valorización de residuos en la industria del PHA.
