Abstract
Community shelters have emerged as key spaces for care and resilience for children after natural disasters, as evidenced by the 2016 earthquake in Bahía de Caráquez, Ecuador. In these environments, children developed resilience and agency through mutual care, play, and community participation—actions that redefined public spaces in the absence of state support. Through participatory video, their perspectives and experiences were recorded, highlighting their active role in shaping new social dynamics. This analysis underscores the importance of recognizing community action and strengthening participatory public policies that foster collective resilience and address the needs of children in crisis contexts.
