Obesity is a pandemic and a worldwide public health problem since it affects several age groups and is a risk factor for multiple chronic diseases that reduce quality of life and increase morbidity and mortality. Two out of every six people in developed countries have obesity and it is of utmost importance to find new strategies for its management. Thus, due to the lack of efficiency in strategies focused on a single health area, it is necessary to establish a multidisciplinary approach in which cognitive-behavioral therapies, physical training, nutrition, pharmacology and bariatric surgery should be incorporated. The present protocol aims to guide the diagnosis of the type of obesity, its comorbidities, and the management of the patient with healthy weight loss goals. Clinical practice guidelines, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses between the periods 2014 to 2019 were analyzed. The recommendations of peer reviewers were followed and relevant publications were included, even outside the analysis period, in order to provide the best available information for the treating medical team. The protocol was divided into each aspect related to multidisciplinary management, grading evidence and treatments with algorithms and charts that favor structured decision making. We highlight key points for health professionals to make evidence-based decisions to improve the health and quality of life of people with overweight and obesity.
