Abstract

This essay examines the transformation of visuality regimes associated with guano extraction at the Chincha Islands in Peru from the nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century. These transformations are framed as part of a broader shift in the relationship between the consolidation of capitalism in the Peruvian context and its increasingly technocratic approach to nature. The research traces a transformation in the extractive imagination of guano through nonfiction writing and the analysis of visual archives that circulated during that period.
