Contribution of Legal Cinema to the Development of a New Pedagogy of Law

Abstract

It is a well-known fact that the performing arts have multiple functions; obviously, the primary one is to entertain the public, especially today, in times when society lives under stress amidst turbulent situations. However, both film and the other performing arts are characterized by their potential to address all kinds of themes, sensations, emotions, and feelings, and therefore offer an immense range of possibilities in terms of situations from which scripts are developed, and productions are based; among which, of course, are legal situations.

This article delves into the pedagogical uses that those moments in the lives of individuals and social communities, which are shaped by legal norms and whose most complex situations have been dramatized, can have in legal education.

Various artistic productions, through the performing arts, have highlighted how people struggle to achieve their rights and how legal systems, instead of helping to solve problems, can establish limitations and restrictions on the development of their freedoms, even becoming unjust. These productions can be used to innovate legal education and applied alongside other tools to make effective.
