Author Guidelines

All manuscripts submitted to Ánima must meet the following guidelines.

Types of Contributions

• Academic Articles
  • Provide substantial conclusions on their subject matter.
  • Present a comprehensive analysis and include a sufficient amount of theoretical support.
  • For this type of text, it is recommended to follow the following structure: introduction with problem statement, thesis sentence, and outline; development with paragraphs that support and justify the thesis (preferably, the first sentence of each paragraph will contain the thesis or main idea); conclusion that summarizes what was presented in the article and should not contain additional information.
• Creative Work
  • The work must be unpublished and cannot have been generated, partially or wholly, with artificial intelligence tools.
  • Impeccable spelling and grammar are expected. If any stylistic deviation is part of the artistic intention, it must be fully justified.
  • Excellent use of images, literary tropes, and resources that enrich the text beyond mere description or superficial narration will be valued.
• Expert Opinion or Educational Articles
  • This space encourages the publication of opinion or educational articles related to Philosophy, Art History, and/or Literature. This section is intended exclusively for texts whose authors are experts in any of the aforementioned disciplines.

Author Guidelines

The Ánima monographic series accepts only unpublished works related to Philosophy, Art History, Literature, and Creative Writing. However, manuscripts that have been published as theses in institutional repositories or works that have been presented in academic contexts such as classes or conferences are acceptable. While there are topics that cross boundaries between different fields of knowledge, each article must be classifiable primarily in only one of them. Articles must respect the following guidelines:

Length and Text Formatting for Academic Articles

Philosophy, Art History, and Literature

1. File Format

• Document in Microsoft Word (*.doc or *.docx);
• The text must not include any additional formatting beyond what is specified in these guidelines.

2. Page Design

• Paper size: A4;
• Margins: 2.5 cm on each side;
• Line spacing: 1.5 lines;
• Font: Times New Roman, 12 points;

3. Length

• Approximately 3000 words.

4. Text Formatting

• Words in a language different from the main text language must be written in italics;
• Avoid capital letters, bold, and highlighting as emphasis resources; italics are preferred.

5. Tables and Figures

• Tables and figures are numbered with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text;
  • Examples: Table 1, Tables 1–3; Fig. 1, Figs. 1–4.
• Each table or figure must be accompanied by a brief caption below it that allows for proper interpretation.

6. Images

• Minimum resolution: 300 dpi;
• Images must be included in the document and also uploaded as separate files to the platform;
• For pictorial works, the image caption must include: author, title of the work, date, dimensions, and city.

7. Citations and References

• All citations in the body of the text will use parenthetical form according to MLA format;
• Footnotes are reserved exclusively for clarifications, not for citations;
• A complete bibliography in MLA format must be included at the end of the text.

First Page Format

• Title
  • In bold;
  • Should be concise and understandable for readers not familiar with the article topic;
  • Only the first word and proper nouns begin with a capital letter;
  • If necessary, it can be divided into a title and subtitle using a colon (:);
  • The title must be presented in both English and Spanish.
• Author Names
  • Must be present on the OJS platform and on the first page of the manuscript;
  • When there is more than one author, names are separated by commas only (,).
• Author Affiliations
  • Every author must have an institutional affiliation;
  • The affiliation must include the name of the organization and its location (country);
  • Authors must ensure that their name is correctly spelled both on the platform and in the manuscript.
• Abstract
  • Every text must have a maximum 300-word paragraph in English that explains the main arguments of the text, the methodology used, and the most important conclusions;
  • It must not include citations;
  • It must not include abbreviations;
  • It must not be more than one paragraph.
• Resumen
  • It is the Spanish translation of the abstract.
• Keywords
  • Maximum 10 words or groups of words in English, separated by commas and different from those contained in the title.
• Palabras clave
  • Spanish translation of the keywords.

Ánima reserves the right to edit the translations of first-page elements.

Manuscript Organization

It is suggested to structure the manuscript as follows:

1. Title;
2. Title in second language;
3. Abstract;
4. Keywords;
5. Resumen;
6. Palabras clave;
7. Text with introduction, development, and conclusion;
8. References.

Length and Text Formatting for Creative Works

Creative Writing

Ánima, as part of its commitment to promoting literary creation, has a section dedicated to highlighting the creative talent of undergraduate and graduate students. This space seeks to celebrate creative writing in genres such as short stories and poetry, providing a platform for authors to share their unique voice.

Texts that apply to this section must comply with the following characteristics:

• Originality: The work must be unpublished and cannot have been generated, partially or wholly, with artificial intelligence tools.
• Linguistic Quality: Impeccable spelling and grammar are expected. If any stylistic deviation is part of the artistic intention, it must be fully justified.
• Literary Quality and Depth: Excellent use of images, literary tropes, and resources that enrich the text beyond mere description or superficial narration will be valued.

Ánima is an open-access publication, which means that any reader will be able to enjoy the published works without restrictions. Authors are reminded that when submitting their work, they must guarantee that they own the rights to their creation and that it does not infringe the intellectual property of third parties.

1. File Format

• Texts must be submitted in Microsoft Word format (*.doc or *.docx);
• The text must not include any additional formatting beyond what is specified in these guidelines.

2. Length

• The length of texts will be between 150 and 3000 words.

3. Page Design and Typography

• A4 sheet, margins of 2.5 cm per side, line spacing of 1.5;
• Font: Times New Roman, 12 points.

4. Images

When images are used, the same guidelines for images in academic articles should be followed (see above).

First Page Format

• Title
  • In bold;
  • If necessary, it can be divided into title and subtitle using a colon (:).

Citation Manual

For publication, each text must cite its sources following the MLA format summarized below.

The citation and reference style of the Modern Language Association (MLA) is a commonly used format in the humanities and interdisciplinary fields associated with these disciplines. Following its creation in the United States, this style has achieved global reach. Currently, the format is in its ninth edition. The reference list or bibliography always appears at the end of the document, on a separate page, titled “Works Cited,” in alphabetical order with hanging indentation. MLA citations and references require identifying the source information in the following order:

1. Author;
2. Title of the source;
3. Title of the container (name of the journal, website, encyclopedia, anthology, etc.);
4. Other contributors (editors, translators, or compilers);
5. Version;
6. Number (volume and issue number);
7. Publisher;
8. Publication date;
9. Location (page numbers and/or URL or DOI).

It is possible that certain bibliographic sources do not have all of these elements, but it is necessary to include those that correspond to have a more complete list of references. If the author’s name is not available, the citation will proceed with the title and so on successively.

There are two ways to cite: direct quotations and paraphrasing. For short direct quotes with less than four lines of prose (or less than three lines of poetry), the citation is included within the paragraph in quotation marks. For a long direct quotation with four or more lines of prose (or three or more lines of poetry), the quotation is written outside the paragraph, without quotation marks and with half-inch indentation.

Below are examples of the most common MLA reference sources.

Article Submission

• All texts must be submitted through the OJS Portal by creating a user account in the Submissions section.
• The submission must include all required information (author name and affiliation, etc.).
• The submission must consist of a single file with the manuscript plus the corresponding images.
