Author Guidelines

All manuscripts submitted to Anima must meet the following guidelines:

Types of contributions:

  • Academic articles:
    • They provide substantial conclusions on their subject matter.
    • They present an exhaustive analysis and include a sufficient amount of theoretical support.
    • For this type of text it is recommended to follow the following structure: introduction with problem statement, thesis sentence and outline; development with paragraphs that support and justify the thesis, preferably, the first sentence of each paragraph will contain the thesis or main idea; conclusion that summarizes what was exposed in the article, should not contain more information.
  • Creative work:
    • The work must be unpublished and cannot have been generated, partially or totally, with artificial intelligence tools.
    • Impeccable spelling and grammar are expected. If any stylistic deviation is part of the artistic intention, it must be fully justified.
    • Excellent use of images, literary tropes and resources that enrich the text beyond mere description or superficial narration will be valued.
  • Expert opinion articles:
    • This space encourages the publication of opinion or popularization articles related to Philosophy, Art History and/or Literature. This section is intended only for texts whose authors are experts in any of the aforementioned disciplines.

Author Guidelines

The Ánima monographic series accepts only unpublished works related to Art History, Philosophy, Literature and Creative Writing, as well as thesis publications in institutional repositories and works that have been carried out in academic contexts such as classes or conferences. Each topic covered should specialize in only one of these four branches. To be considered, articles should respect the following guidelines:

Length and Text Formatting for academic papers

History of Art, Philosophy and Literature

  • Length: They will be between 1500 and 2500 words of length.
  • Format: File in Microsoft Word format (* .doc or * .docx).
  • Font type: Times New Roman, 12 points.
  • Page layout: A4 sheet, 2.5 cm margins per side, 1.5 spacing.
  • Any word in a language other than the one used in the text must be written in italics.
  • Do not use bold or underlining to emphasize words. Instead, italics will be used to mark the emphasis.
  • If necessary, the tables and figures used must be numbered with Arabic numerals in the order they appear in the text. Examples: Tab. 1, Tab. 1-3; Fig. 1; Figs. 1-4.
  • Each figure or table must have a brief explanation below it to provide the necessary context for its correct interpretation.
  • If necessary, the images sent must have a resolution of 300 dpi.
  • Illustration captions: for the pictorial works that are intended to be shown, it is necessary to specify the author, title of the work, date, dimensions and city.
  • All citations will use parenthetical form and follow the MLA format.
  • Footnotes should be used for clarification only and not for citations.
  • Each text must contain at the end the list of the bibliography used in MLA format.
  • The text must not have any additional formatting.

Format

First page

  • Title
    • In bold
    • It should be concise and understandable for readers who are not familiar with the subject of the article
    • Only the first word and proper names begin with a capital letter
    • If necessary, it can be divided into title and subtitle using a colon (:)
    • The title must be presented in English and Spanish
  • Name of the authors
    • They must be present on the OJS platform and on the first page of the manuscript
    • When there is more than one author, the names are separated only with commas (,)
  • Author affiliations
    • Every author must have an institutional affiliation
    • The affiliation must include the name of the organization and its location (country)
    • All authors must meet the requisites of "Ánima authorship requirements". Those who have collaborated with the writing of the text and do not meet these requirements will be mentioned in Acknowledgments
    • Authors must ensure that their name is well written both on the platform and in the manuscript
  • Abstract
    • All texts must have a paragraph of maximum 250 words that explains the main arguments of the article, the methodology used, and the most important conclusions
    • It should not include quotes
    • It should not include abbreviations
    • It should not be more than one paragraph
    • If the original text is in English, the Ánima Editorial Committee will be in charge of translating the abstract into Spanish
  • Resumen
    • It is the Spanish translation of the abstract
    • If the original text is in Spanish, the Ánima Editorial Committee will be in charge of translating the abstract into English
  • Key words
    • Maximum 10 words or groups of words in English, separated by commas and different from those contained by the title
    • If the original text is in English, Ánima Editorial Committee will be in charge of translating the keywords into Spanish
  • Palabras clave
    • Spanish translation of the key words
    • If the original text is in Spanish, Ánima Editorial Committee will be in charge of translating the keywords into English

Manuscript Organization

It is suggested that the manuscript will be structured in the following way:

  1. Title
  2. Title in second language
  3. Abstract
  4. Key words
  5. Resumen
  6. Palabras clave
  7. Text with introduction, development and conclusions
  8. Acknowledgments
  9. References

Length and Text Formatting for creative works

Creative Writing

Ánima, as part of its commitment to promoting literary creation, plans to inaugurate a section dedicated to highlighting the creative talent of undergraduate and graduate students. This space seeks to celebrate creative writing in genres such as short stories and poetry, providing a platform for authors to share their unique voice.

The texts that apply to this new section must comply with the following characteristics:

  1. Originality: the work must be unpublished and cannot have been generated, partially or totally, with artificial intelligence tools.
  2. Linguistic quality: Impeccable spelling and grammar are expected. If any stylistic deviation is part of the artistic intention, it must be fully justified.
  3. Literary quality and depth: Excellent use of images, literary tropes and resources that enrich the text beyond mere description or superficial narration will be valued.

Ánima is an open access publication, which means that any reader will be able to enjoy the published works without restrictions. Authors are also reminded that when submitting their work, they must guarantee that they own the rights to their creation and that it does not infringe the intellectual property of third parties.

  • Length: The length of the texts will be from 150 to 3000 words.
  • Format: Microsoft Word file format (*.doc or *.docx)
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt.
  • Page layout: A4 sheet, 2.5 cm margins per side, 1.5 spacing.
  • Any words in a language other than that of the text should be written in italics.
  • Emphasis typographical resources (capital letters, bold, highlighting) should be avoided, instead, italics are recommended.
  • Images submitted should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi.
  • Captions: for pictorial works intended to be shown, it is necessary to specify the author, title of the work, date, dimensions and city.
  • All citations should use parenthetical form and follow MLA format.
  • Footnotes should be used only for clarification and not for citations
  • Each text should contain at the end the list of the bibliography used in MLA format
  • The text should not have any additional formatting.

Citation manual

For its publication, each text must have its sources cited in accord to the MLA format, which is summarised here:

The cites and references style of the Modern Language Association (MLA) is a commonly utilised format used in the humanities areas and interdisciplinary fields associated to these disciplines. After its creation in the United States, this style has reached a global range. Currently, the format is on its Eight Edition and a Ninth Edition has been announced for April 2021. The works cited list goes at the end of the document, in a separate page, in alphabetical order, and with hanging indentation. The citations and references in the MLA format require the identification of the source"™s information in the following order:

  • Author
  • Title
  • Institution or Journal
  • Contributors (editors, translators, or compliers)
  • Version or volume
  • Number
  • Publisher
  • Publication date
  • Page numbers
  • URL

It might be the case that a source doesn"™t have all of these elements, but it is necessary to have as many as possible so as to have a more complete works cited list. In case that the author"™s name is not present, the citations will be done with the title and it will be done as thus successively.

There are two ways to cite: with direct quotations or paraphrasing. For short quotes, with less than 35 words, the citation is included inside the paragraph between quotation marks. For a large quote, with more than 35 words, the citation is written outside the paragraph, with indentation and without quotation marks.

Uploading the article

  • Every text must be sent through the Portal OJS after creating an account in the "Submissions" section
  • The uploaded document must include all the required information (name and affiliation of the author, etc.)
  • There must be only one uploaded document

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The text has 1.5 line spacing; 12 point font size; italics are used instead of underlining (except in URLs); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed in the appropriate places in the text, rather than at the end.
  • The conclusions of the texts are based on the adequate, justified and appropriate interpretation of the philosophical, literary bibliographic material or of the pictorial works that are going to be analyzed in the different sections.
  • The manuscripts follow the standards used in the different disciplines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor has it been submitted for consideration by any other journal or monographic series. However, we will consider manuscripts that have been published as theses in institutional repositories or papers that have been presented in academic contexts such as classes or conferences, as long as they comply with the format detailed in the author guidelines.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, that appear in About the journal.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word format.
  • Whenever possible, URLs are provided for references.
  • The study must meet all applicable standards of experimental ethics and scientific integrity. The monographic series adheres to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)/a and the Guidance/a. Authors are expected to comply with this code of conduct and best practices, including issues of authorship, plagiarism and image manipulation. We welcome original and unpublished articles that are not part of other editorial selection processes in other serial publications. The journal uses iThenticate-Similarity Check/a, Crossref's iThenticate-Similarity Check/a application that works with Turnitin.

Copyright Notice

Authors who publish in the journal agree to the following terms:

  1. Authors will retain their copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication of their work, which will be simultaneously subject to the Creative Commons Acknowledgment License that allows third parties to share the work provided that its author and first publication in this journal are indicated.
  2. Authors may adopt other non-exclusive license agreements for distribution of the published version of the work, thus being able to publish it in a monographic volume or reproduce it in other ways, as long as the initial publication in this journal is indicated.
  3. Authors are allowed and encouraged to disseminate their work through the Internet:
    1. Prior to submission to the journal, authors can deposit the manuscript in preprint servers/repositories, including
      arXiv, bioRxiv, figshare, PeerJ Preprints, SSRN, among others, which can produce interesting exchanges and increase citations of the published work (See El efecto del acceso abierto).
    2. After submission, authors are encouraged to deposit their article in their institutional repository, personal website, or scientific social network (such as Zenodo, ResearchGate or Academia.edu).
