Abstract

Neon Afterwords (2016) is an immersive installation in which seven sentences, written in fluorescent LED light tubes, float at different heights in the dark space of a room. The sentences were chosen by the artist from «The Ethnographer», the short story by Jorge Luis Borges written in 1969.

The viewer, surrounded by the luminous words on display in the dark space with no su- ggested hierarchy of reading, can grasp their interaction and overlap by following a layering of meaning centered on perception and experience. The content of the sentences recalls the “secret” gleaned by the Anthropologist in his experience of working in the field, and his refusal, upon returning, to explain it.

Neon Afterwords includes the mentioned neon work and three copies of Borges’ book In Praise of Darkness in its bilingual version (Spanish/English). It contains the short story «The Ethnographer». Distributed in six pages and presented in the three books exhibited, key sentences of the story that are reproduced in neon are erased from the books with blue tape making a clear reference to the Italian artist Emilio Isgrò.
