Abstract

My work talks about the history and memory of migratory experiences. My ever-changing and evolving interdisciplinary practice investigates the visual language and material composition of vernacular architecture and the lineage of migrant communities.

every measure of zero incorporates embossments and transfers of dress pattern wax paper. Each substrate provides a recording of each original mark. They are then shuffled amongst each other to create a series of marks that off-set the sequence of copy and original. The translation and loss of information from one copy to the other is key to this process - erasure becomes an active presence and translation becomes an unreliable mediator. Additionally, through the process of marking and melting the wax paper with an iron, the imagery is recognizable and disorienting simultaneously.

I limit my palette to dress pattern wax paper, embossments, and ironing to insist upon the manual labor of garment makers. The traditions of pre-Columbian textiles and my mother"™s history as a seamstress offer the political and aesthetic context for my material decision.
