The emerging figure of Wilson Orellana (Cuenca, Ecuador, 1988) within contemporary Ecuadorian painting undoubtedly invites reflection on numerous philosophical aspects of the contemporary becoming. To relate the development of his work to the concepts of dwelling in catastrophe and the absurd links it not only to certain traits of the unhinged time we are living in, but also to the bold exercise of recovering ideas that have shaped, above all, twentieth-century and turn-of-the-century philosophy. This confirms the continued validity of these ideas as tools for understanding the present and the fundamental role of art as a generator of meaning—or simply of its lack and absence.
