Abstract

Antemurale Christianitatis (1892) is an emblem of Croatian nationalism and is part of Ferdinand von Quiquerez-Beaujeu's works highlighting the role of the "Bulwark of Christianity" in the face of Ottoman invasions. This article will examine the work within academic art highlighting its detailed technique, symbolic use of color, and dynamic composition that evokes divine connection and resistance in view of preserving the ideals of the West. It discusses how the painting celebrates Croatian resistance by using historical figures and nationalist symbolism to defend cultural identity, religion, and European values in the face of external threats, serving as a reminder of Europe's ongoing struggle against the Ottoman Empire.
