Author Guidelines

The journal El Outsider was founded with the aim of promoting academic production that includes informative, investigative, and critical political analysis of current issues related to International Relations and Political Science.

The journal is subject to the formatting, selection, evaluation, and publication guidelines for articles submitted through double-blind peer review. These processes are carried out by the Editorial Board and specialized external reviewers belonging to the Academic Committee, in accordance with the established editorial policy.
Each issue is made up of the following sections:

Academic Articles

This section of the journal is reserved for authored research articles on topics aligned with the editorial policy. The aim is to disseminate current, analytical, critical, and coherent works that make a valuable contribution to academic debates. The articles are divided into two subsections.

a) Special Topic

Every October, a brief description of a current topic will be published on the journal's website and social media. It will be formulated with sufficient openness to allow for multifaceted analysis. Authors should write papers focusing on the special topic; marginal mention or collateral analysis is not permitted.

b) Open Topic
Open topic works will be considered for publication as long as they comply with the journal's editorial policy. If you have any questions, please contact the Editorial Committee.

The publication of integration projects, theses, or dissertations will require adaptation of the manuscript to the standard article format.

Event Proceedings

This section consists of event proceedings, which are defined as documents that compile the presentations, opinions, and summaries presented at events, conferences, and/or seminars, with the aim of disseminating and synthesizing opinions and progress. The events must be important and current, both within and outside the special topic, and in accordance with the journal's editorial policy.

Opinion Columns

These columns will be informed opinions on topics of interest and current events, published independently of the issue. Each month, they will be received, reviewed, and published on the website and social media. The most relevant columns within the special topic will be included in the official issue.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published or submitted for consideration by any other journal (or an explanation has been provided in the comments to the editor). However, papers published as theses in institutional repositories or papers presented in academic contexts such as classes or conferences will not be considered previously published, as long as they comply with the format detailed in the Author Guidelines and Article Acceptance Requirements.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point Times New Roman font size; has 2.5 cm margins; italics are used instead of underlining (except for URLs); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed in the appropriate places in the text, rather than at the end (no appendices).
  • There can be a maximum of five co-authors and there can only be one article, either individual or collaborative, per author in each edition. These requirements may change depending on the decision of the Editorial Committee in each editorial period.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements established in the pertinent guides and manuals.
  • Authors' affiliations: every author must have an institutional affiliation, i.e., the name of the organization to which he/she belongs and his/her country. If there is no institutional affiliation, authors may declare themselves as independent researchers. Do not place the name of the author(s) on the first page of the document, since this information is already provided by the Open Journal Systems (OJS) account of the author(s).
  • Whenever possible, URLs are provided for references.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word format.
  • There is no conflict of interest in the article; if there is any, it must be declared in the manuscript after the Conclusions section.
  • The name of the Microsoft Word file containing the article should be saved only with the name of the title of the article and the initials of the first name and last name of the author separated by an underscore. If the article has been written by several authors, only add the initials of one of them.

Copyright Notice

The authors, by publishing in this journal, accept the following terms: 

  1. The authors will retain their copyrights and will guarantee the journal the right of first publication of their work, which will be simultaneously subject to the Creative Commons Acknowledgement License that allows third parties to share the work as long as its author and its first publication in this journal are indicated.
  2. Authors may adopt other non-exclusive license agreements for the distribution of the published version of the work, thus being able to publish it in a monographic volume or reproduce it in other ways, provided that the initial publication in this journal is indicated.
  3. Authors are allowed and encouraged to disseminate their work via the Internet:
    1. Before submission to the journal, authors can deposit the manuscript in preprint servers/repositories, including arXiv, bioRxiv, figshare, PeerJ Preprints, and SSRN, among others, which can produce interesting exchanges and increase citations of the published work (See The effect of open access).
    2. After submission, it is recommended that authors deposit their article in their institutional repository, personal web page, or scientific social network (such as Zenodo, ResearchGate o Academia.edu).
