Abstract

On April 22, 2017, around 9:00 a.m., I photographed an individual of Crimson-rumped Toucanet Aulacorhynchus haematopygus at Tandayapa Bird Lodge (0.000069, -78.677751, 1740 m asl), province of Pichincha, preying on a Buff-tailed Coronet Boissonneaua flavescens. This toucanet hopped on the branches around the hummingbird feeders, and quickly dived and caught the hummingbird in flight with its beak. The hummingbird struggled to free himself, without success. The toucanet perched on a branch near c. 1.5 m from the ground, where it compacted its prey using the legs and beak, and engulfed it whole. The entire event lasted less than a minute.
