The Eared Dove Zenaida auriculata (Columbidae) is one of the most common and widely distributed bird species in South America, found in a variety of habitats and ecosystems except for the Amazon rainforest. Despite being a seed specialist, Z. auriculata has successfully adapted to urban environments, taking advantage of the favorable niches offered by urban or highly anthropized areas for its population growth. In the present study, we contribute to the knowledge of the reproductive biology of Z. auriculata through the monitoring of three nests in two localities (one rural and one urban) and through four opportunistic observations of reproductive behavior in a rural locality of Distrito Metropolitano de Quito, Pichincha province. We report reproductive behavior from courtship and copulation, incubation, brooding, to the fledgling emancipation. Egg laying was asynchronous, and clutch size consisted of two oval-shaped, white eggs per nest. The incubation period lasted 16 days, and the brooding period lasted 15 days. Both adults participated in incubation and brooding. This study provides basic data on the reproduction of Z. auriculata and highlights the need to publish information about common species that exhibit high population densities in urban areas.
