Peer-Review Process

All submitted manuscripts undergo a peer-review process by external reviewers not part of the editorial committee. Their role is to determine whether the manuscript contributes meaningfully to the scientific literature on birds of Ecuador and the Neotropics. After evaluation by at least two external reviewers, authors will be informed of the decision within 1–2 months through the journal’s OJS platform.

The handling editor will be responsible for making the final decision based on the reviewers' comments. Possible editorial decisions include:

  • Accept the submission
  • Accept with minor revisions
  • Request revisions
  • Reject the submission

Basic criteria guiding the review:

  1. The manuscript complies with the journal’s editorial policies (see the Submissions section).
  2. The research is within the journal’s scope, clearly defines a relevant research question or topic, and explains how the study fills a gap in knowledge.
  3. The research is rigorous and meets technical standards, with methods described in sufficient detail for reproducibility and adherence to ethical standards.
  4. The data are robust and either presented in the manuscript or made available in an academic repository.
  5. Conclusions are clearly presented, tied to the study’s objectives, and supported by the results.
  6. Hypotheses or speculations, if present, are clearly stated and grounded in theoretical frameworks.

Manuscript decisions are based on the originality and methodological soundness of the study. The decision is not influenced by subjective factors such as novelty, potential impact, or niche interest.

Authorship requirements

The Revista Ecuatoriana de Ornitología adheres to the authorship guidelines of the ICMJE. To qualify for authorship, contributors must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Substantial contributions to the conception, design, data acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of the study;
  • Drafting the work or critically revising it for intellectual content;
  • Final approval of the version to be published;
  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the work is appropriately investigated and resolved.

The persons conducting the work are responsible for identifying who meets the authorship criteria. It is the collective responsibility of the authors, and not the journal to which the paper is submitted, to determine that all persons meet the four authorship criteria. It is not the role of the journal editors to determine who does or does not qualify as an author or to arbitrate in authorship disputes.

Acquisition of funds, general supervision of a research group, administrative support, writing assistance, technical editing, language editing, or proofreading are activities that, by themselves (without other contributions), do not qualify a contributor as an author.

Ethics and publishing code

In pursuit of the highest standards, the journal adheres to the Honor Code and Conduct Policy of Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) and the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Authors' responsibilities include:

  • The authors confirm and ratify that the articles submitted are original and unpublished and that they do not contain parts of other authors or fragments of previously published works. Likewise, they confirm the veracity of the data presented when testing and/or verifying the hypotheses proposed.
  • Authors should not submit articles in which the same analyses are repeated in more than one scientific journal or in any other academic or scientific publication.
  • Authors should be careful with the sources and properly cite the contributions mentioned in the article.
  • It is important to prioritize the order of appearance of co-authors according to their level of responsibility and involvement. Authors guarantee the inclusion of collaborators and/or co-authors who have contributed scientifically and intellectually to the concept, planning, work, interpretation and treatment of the research results, as well as to the writing of the article.
  • Authors should declare any potential conflicts of interest (see Conflicts of Interest). Authors are also responsible for indicating any funding from agencies and/or projects, the result of which is the article submitted.
  • In the event that authors have identified a major error or inaccuracy in the published article, they should immediately inform the editors of the journal and provide all the necessary information to the editors of the journal.
  • The authors are responsible for the contents of the published articles; therefore, they are committed to carry out a review of the most current and relevant scientific literature on the analyzed topic.

Plagiarism and originality policy

All manuscripts submitted to the Revista Ecuatoriana de Ornitología are inspected by anti-plagiarism programs according to the Code of Honor and Coexistence of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito USFQ and the policies of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). To ensure the originality of academic and scientific papers, the Turnitin or Similarity Check platforms of iThenticate are used, which analyzes and compares the similarity or coincidences with other publications. The editor-in-chief, Juan Freile, is responsible for reviewing the similarity reports prior to the assignment of the section editor.

This process guarantees that the papers are unpublished and, in turn, ensures compliance with the quality standards of the journal, in terms of the endorsement of scientific production.

Overlapping or multiple publication: it is important to avoid duplication of publications, which implies submission of the same article in more than one journal and simultaneous submission of the same document to multiple journals for review. This practice also applies to publications in different languages, since the scientific content is identical in both contributions.

The Revista Ecuatoriana de Ornitología has an automatic rejection policy for manuscripts that have been previously published in other journals, except on exceptional occasions, such as an invitation to publish a canonical article or when paying tribute to a researcher and his or her trajectory.

Archiving and backup

The Revista Ecuatoriana de Ornitología is stored in Archive.org, a website where the upload of each PDF, that is, each article separately, is updated.
