About the Journal

DESCRIPTION

The USFQ Economic Review is an academic journal that publishes outstanding undergraduate research in economics and related disciplines. This open-access, peer-reviewed, and electronic journal is managed by student editors from the School of Economics at Universidad San Francisco de Quito. Articles are published continuously in both English and Spanish under the USFQ PRESS imprint.

The primary goal of this journal is to provide a platform for undergraduate students to share their research in economics-related fields, fostering a culture of rigorous and high-quality research early in their academic careers. Additionally, it aims to introduce students to the peer-review process, contributing to their development as researchers.

The journal focuses on publishing two formats: papers and short articles.
  • Papers: These are comprehensive, well-supported, and rigorous research works that undergo an extensive review process by the USFQ Economic Review Scientific Committee and Editorial Board. These papers include original research, in-depth analyses, or theoretical explorations that make significant contributions to the field of economics and related disciplines. They are aimed at readers seeking detailed and academically robust discussions that expand the boundaries of knowledge.
  • Short articles: These are concise and accessible texts offering quick insights, summaries of recent developments, or discussions of emerging trends in economics. They also undergo a rigorous review process to ensure academic quality. Short articles aim to bridge the gap between academic research and a broader audience, presenting complex topics in a clear and accessible manner while maintaining high academic standards.
Through these efforts, the USFQ Economic Review promotes the dissemination of innovative ideas and the early development of academic skills, reinforcing its commitment to excellence and high-quality research.

AUDIENCE

EDITORIAL POLICIES

Peer Review Process

This journal operates a double-blind review process. All contributions will be initially assessed by the Editorial Board for suitability for the journal. Papers deemed suitable are then typically sent to a minimum of two independent expert reviewers to assess the scientific quality of the paper. The Editor is responsible for the final decision regarding the acceptance or rejection of articles. The Editor's decision is final. Editors are not involved in decisions about papers that they have written themselves or have been written by family members or colleagues or which relate to products or services in which the editor has an interest. Any such submission is subject to all the journal's usual procedures, with peer review handled independently of the relevant editor and their research groups.

As part of the submission process, authors must include a Letter to the Editor in which they shortly present the research question they address in the paper, its main contributions, its main results and a paragraph explaining why they believe that the Journal is a good fit for the paper.

Authorship

Before submitting their work, writers are expected to carefully check the list and order of authors and to provide the definitive list of authors at the time of the original submission.  All authors must have allowed being listed on the submitted paper.

Any changes to the authorship list, such as the addition, deletion, or rearranging of names, should be made only after the manuscript has been accepted and only with the approval of the editor of the journal.  The editor must acquire the following information from the author to make such a request:

  • The justification for the modification in the authors' list.
  • Written confirmation (e-mail, letter) from all authors that they agree with the addition, removal, or rearrangement.
  • In the case of addition or removal of authors, this includes confirmation from the author being added or removed. The publication of the manuscript will be halted while the Editor reviews the request.

After the paper has been approved, the Editor will only consider the addition, deletion, or rearranging of authors in exceptional circumstances. Any requests authorized by the Editor will result in a corrigendum if the manuscript has already been published in an online edition.

Ethics in Publishing

This is the statement of ethics adopted and covers the code of ethics for the Editor-in-chief, co-editors, editorial board members, scientific committee reviewers, and authors.

Authors should submit only original work that is not plagiarized and has not been published or being considered elsewhere.

Appropriate software may be used by the editorial office to check for similarities between submitted manuscripts with existing literature. The inclusion of fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements is unacceptable. Work and/or words from other publications must be appropriately cited or quoted. Authors should state their results clearly, honestly, and without fabrication, falsification, or inappropriate data manipulation. The methods used in the work should be clearly and unambiguously described so that the findings can be repeated and confirmed by other researchers.

Manuscript Review

Once the editor receives the reviewers’ reports, the author will receive a notification of the peer review process and the editor’s decision. The editor will decide if a second peer review process is necessary after the first round of revisions.

Upon the completion of each round of the review process, an article will receive an evaluation result as follows:

  • Accepted
  • Accepted with minor revision
  • Accepted with major revision
  • Rejected or declined

Papers will be published in the academic journal between one to two months after acceptance.
