Migration of Machala's print media to digital environments in 2020

Abstract

This research analyzed the situation of the printed media in the province of El Oro, in southern Ecuador, a province bordering Peru and with a significant economic impact due to the fall in the sale of its copies, in the first quarter of 2020, due to the pandemic situation caused by the covid-19 virus. For this study, journalists, directors and editors of the following media were interviewed: Semanario La Verdad and the newspapers Correo, Opinion and El Nacional who gave their testimonies about how their company had to face the economic crisis and the measures they opted for subsist. In this regard, they spoke, among other topics, of migration to digital environments, as a free and accessible means of continuing to offer information to its readers. In the analysis of the interviews, key testimonies were accessed to learn about the challenges facing the local orense press, among which he highlighted the literacy of the community in digital subscription.
