Incidence of Dry Socket as a Complication Post-Surgical Extraction in patients treated at the Dental Clinic of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the demographic impact of Dry Socket, after the surgical extraction of any tooth in patients between 15 and 90 years old. One thousand six hundred and two clinical histories of surgical extractions that satisfied the study"™s criteria were evaluated. A Chi Squared distribution method was used to determine if a relation existed between the data obtained in the medical histories such as age, sex and important diseases among others and the Dry Sockets. Statistically a relation was found between Dry Sockets and: 60 years old patients or older, Third molars extraction, Consumptions of oral contraceptives, Periodontal Disease, Cavities and Infections. To conclude, it is important to consider the medical and dental history of a patient in order to prevent this kind of complications.
