Archives that (in) form exhibitions: Notes on the before, during and after the historiographical investigation of art

Abstract

Over the past three and a half decades, interest in listening to the silences in the official archives has grown. In the area that concerns me as a researcher and curator of Latin American, Caribbean and Latin art in the United States, I have had the opportunity to work and study projects that seek to trace the memory of certain moments in art history that have not been sufficiently studied, disseminated or put to use by the practice of art and curatorship. What constitutes memory, incidentally, is not necessarily written history, but in many cases what is sought to be rescued includes photographs, correspondence, musings, among others.
